Crohn's Disease

  • Crohn’s disease falls under the category of an inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. It is a chronic disease which affects the GI (gastrointestinal) tract.
  • Crohn’s disease is characterized by weight loss, regular diarrhea or constipation, persistent fever, pain or cramping in the abdominal region and bloody stools.
  • Although Crohn’s disease cannot be cured, it is important for patients to receive medical care in managing it. Since Crohn’s can affect certain areas of the GI tract, leave one section healthy and then affect another section of the digestive system, it is easy to see that this condition can affect the body’s ability to break down food. Because of this, sufferers with Crohn’s disease are susceptible to malnutrition.
  • The inflammation that Crohn’s causes is not just restricted to the gastrointestinal tract. The more we can learn about this health condition, the greater chance we have of providing relief to the millions who cope with this disease on a daily basis.

Gouty Arthritis

  • Gout is a unique form of arthritis that causes inflammation due to uric acid crystals forming in the joints. These tiny lumps lodged within tender joints can affect mobility by causing stiffness. The body produces uric acid, and we can also get it from food.
  • There are many reasons why our bodies can accumulate too much uric acid. There may be a genetic component to gout, since your risk for developing it is higher if a relative also suffers from the condition. Obesity and kidney problems also are risk factors for developing gout.
  • Dealing with gouty arthritis over the years can cause much damage to the bones and cartilage in the feet, hands, ears and other parts of the body. Symptoms of gouty arthritis can come and go. When symptoms are present this is called a flare up.

Lupus

  • Lupus is a disease where the immune system attacks itself. The symptoms can range from extreme fatigue, achy joints, and the most noticeable sign, a rash shaped like a butterfly wing.
  • Systemic lupus is the most common types of lupus and it effects both men and women. Lupus development may be related to certain types of medications, genetics, infections and sunlight exposure.
  • Lupus is a chronic condition that can affect important organs in the body, including the heart and lungs so it is important to receive doctor care when managing this condition to avoid complications.
  • In order to diagnose lupus there is not one catchall test. A combination of tests and doctor observation is the only way in which Lupus can be detected.

Osteoarthritis

  • One of the most common ailments affecting millions of people is arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis.
  • This affects the bone joints and limits movement as the cartilage that cushions the bone begins to wear down.
  • Being overweight can put stress on the bones and lead to an increased risk of osteoarthritis.
  • If you have a family member that suffers from this condition, there’s a greater chance that you will also begin to develop the condition. 
  • Repetitive use of the joints or an old injury can lead to arthritis as well. Arthritis cannot be cured and is a degenerative disease that progressively gets worse.

Schizophrenia

  • Schizophrenia is a mental illness that can cause extreme behavioral disturbances that can disrupt daily life.
  • It is not quite known what causes schizophrenia, but genes play a large role in the development of this mental disorder.
  • The symptoms that manifest with this disorder are wide-ranging. Hallucinations, awkward movements, delusional thoughts, and poor attention span.
  • Schizophrenia is currently treated through a multifaceted approach, medication, case management, cognitive therapy and patient education.

Tardive Dyskinesia

  • Tardive dyskinesia is unique in that it is a disease that can be caused by a medication side effect.
  • Sometimes medicines used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorders can result in tardive dyskinesia.
  • This medical condition is characterized by sudden, involuntary movements of the body and face. It is a rare side effect, but more common in those who take these medications for more than 3 months.
  • Newer medications used to treat neurological disorders have a lower incidence of this side effect.

Alzheimer’s Disease

  • Alzheimer’s causes brain cells responsible for memory to deteriorate and die, leading to mental decline or dementia.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is usually detected in those over the age of 65. There is no cure for the disease.
  • As the condition worsens, an individual may feel confused, misplace things, wander, lose the ability to read and the ability to speak. Alzheimer’s sufferers may also begin to withdraw from social activities and begin to experience depression in the earlier stages of their prognosis.
  • Currently there are only drugs that can help an individual cope with the cognitive issues caused by Alzheimer’s but this is only temporary at best.

  • Adolescent depression should not be overlooked as mere teenage ups and downs.Teen depression can have real causes such as academic pressure, unstable family life or perhaps interpersonal relationship problems.

Constipation

  • Constipation is something that everyone has dealt with at one time or another.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Tourette’s Syndrome

  • Tourette’s Syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes a person to have involuntary reflexes such as tics, repeating words, saying inappropriate words and self-harm.
  • It is more common in males but occurs in both males and females. Treatment involves trial and error since there is no one specific medicine to treat Tourette’s syndrome.
  • Although the cause of Tourette’s syndrome is not currently known, it tends to run in families so genes must play a role in its progression and development.
  • This condition is usually found in tandem with other disorders such as ADHD, obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenia.
